Wael Shueb never imagined he would compete at an Olympics, let alone in Karate’s Games debut.

It’s been some journey. One of two male karatekas to be included in the International Olympic Committee (IOC)’s Refugee Olympic Team (EOR), the former Syrian champion fled his war-torn country in 2015 for his own safety and in search of a better life.

His epic and gruelling 30-day trip across Europe, which included a boat journey to Turkey on a rubber dinghy followed by a bike trip on the Balkan road through North Macedonia, was an almighty test of his powers of endurance and mental strength.

Shueb eventually made it to Germany, where he now lives and trains.

The most emotional moment of the finals on Day 4 of EuroKarate2021 will feature Rafael Aghayev of Azerbaijan. The superstar karateka lost his mother just one month before the start of the European Karate Championships.

“I am sure that during the final, my mother will be looking after me from heaven,” said Aghayev in tears after qualifying for the final.

A five-time World champion, eleven-time European title-holder, and arguably one of Karate’s biggest stars, Rafael Aghayev claimed the ticket to the final of Male Kumite -75kg following a 2-0 victory over Noah Bitsch of Germany.

The World Karate Federation has partnered with MSM PR & Communications to deliver a successful communications strategy for the sport’s historic debut at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

MSM will help the WKF’s Communications Department to shape the narrative of Karate’s first Olympic appearance, while also assisting in the delivery of traditional and digital media in the lead up to and during the Games.

“We know the WKF team well from past events so it is quite a natural fit for MSM to join forces with the federation for this significant Olympic milestone,” said MSM CEO Andrew Mitchell. “Together we will tell the stories of the sport and especially the athletes as karate returns ‘home’ for what is arguably the biggest moment in the federation’s history.”
